Whats a Taproot?
The first root that grows directly downwards of a plant; germinates at embryo.
-Single thick downward Root. Main biggest root - Goes deep to reach deep water -allows survival in dry areas/deep water areas |
What is a root radicle
The first root that a plant sends out is called a radicle.
What are Fibrous roots?
roots develop from base of stem. radicle dies.
- heavily Branched out. "adventitious roots" - good anchors for plant vs bad weather, herbivory - good anchors for soil erosion control |
What are Pop Roots
extend from stem for support of plant.
Root Primary functions?
- Absorb Nutrients from Soil
-Anchor plant to ground |
Alternative root functions?
-Store nutrients in Biennial spaces during the winter in ground and get harvested later.
Stems and leaves comprise...?
The "Shoot system" i.e. part above ground
Primary function of leaves /stem
-Provide structural frame work
- Leaves and branches oriented so that photosynthetic surfaces maximally exposed to Sun. -Water moves up through xylem -gas respiration through stomata. co2 in..O2 out. |
Alternative stem functions?
- Can serve as a photosynthetic source eg leafless plants
- "vines" can attach to anything for support - Potatoes (tubers) act as a modified storage stem - "Runner stem" aides in asexual reprodction. root joins stem. |
Leaf alternative functions?
- Teudrils attach plants to walls
- attract pollinating insects - Nutrient storage in bulbs - spines as a defense mech |
Calyx =
collectively sepals
Corolla =
collectively petals
Stamen =
Anther + filament
Anther produces?
Pollen grains
ovary produces
Ovules--> seeds--> fruit
Pistil =
all carpels together.
Carpel comprised of?
1) Stigma
2) Style 3) Ovary |
Stigma is where?
Plants are pollinated.
Flowers basic primary function =
Sexual reproduction
Fruits..
can be dry and light weight.
Fruit basic function =
disperse seeds
monocots vs dicots
monocots= embryo w/ 1 cotyledon i.e. seed leaf
Dicpots =2 cotyledon embryo |
