What is electrolysis?

Electrolysis is a process in which electrical energy, from a direct current (dc) supply breaks down electrolytes to form elements

Where do positive ions (metal ions or H+ ions) move towards during electrolysis?

The cathode; they are known as cations

Positive ions are attracted towards negative

Where do the negative ions (non-metal ions) move towards during electrolysis?

The anode; they are known as anions

Negative ions are attracted to the positive

After passing the current for a short time, what colour does the solution around the CATHODE become?

BLUE

After passing the current for a short time, what colour does the solution around the ANODE become?

YELLOW

How are these colours produced?

By the movement (migration) of the ions in the salt

What do the use of coloured ions in solution show?

The direction that positive & negative ions move in an electronic field

What type of rods are dipped into the test liquid during electrolysis and why?

Graphite
