Transcendentalism
Proposes a belief in a higher reality than that found in sense experience or in a higher kind of knowledge than that achieved by human reason.
Transcendentalism was strongly influenced by Deism, which is what?
Opposed to Calvinism. A certain kind of religious knowledge is either inherent in each person or accessible through the exercise of reason. Transcendentalism also involved a rejection of the strict Puritan religious attitudes that were the heritage of New England, where the movement orginated.
Unlike Puritans, transcendalists saw humans and nature as what?
Possessing and innate goodness. Opposed strict ritualism and dogmatic theology of all established religious institutions.
What aspects of Romanticism influenced the Transcendalists?
Celebration of individualism, and the extollingo of the beauties of nature and haumankind.
Writers at this time expressed?
Semi religious feelings towarde nature and saw a connection between universe and soul. Divinity permeated all objects and the purpose of life was the Oversoul

Formed in Boston in 1836 with essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson and feminist social reformer Margaret Fuller, educartor Bronson Alcott, and author and naturalist Henry David Thoreau.

The Dial. Some of the club's members also participated in an experimental communal living at Brook Farm in Massachussets during the 1840's.
What are major Transcendentalism works?
Emmerson's essay "Nature"
(1936), "Self-Reliance" (1841), Thoreau's "Walden, or life in the woods" (1854), and "Civil Disobedience" an essay by Thoreau urged passive and non-violent resistance to government policies offensible on moral standards.
Who were Anti-transcendentalists?
Nathanial Hawthorne and Herman Melville. Both explore darker side of human nature and consider life in a combination of good and evil while transcendentalists believed humanity was positive and God-like.
