What are the basic aims of fire investigation?

1. Establish most likely cause of fire


2. Establish reasons for the development and spread of fire and smoke


3. Assess the performance of a building or contents in a fire situation for future reference


4. Check the effectiveness of fire safety provisions in a building, did they work?


5. Provide other information for us by LFB in the future

Where is the fire investigation team (FIT) based?

Dowgate fire station

Fire investigation teams will attend on the request of the IC, what are the reasons?

- if IC can not determine cause of fire


- If IC suspects a possible re-kindling of a fire


- If IC is refused entry to an incident for the purpose of fire investigation


- If IC needs to take samples as part of the investigation


- If IC requires support and advice at the scene

Fire investigation units will be order as part of the predetermined attendance to what incidents?

- 4 pump fires and above (except rubbish, crops and field fires unless requested)


- persons reported, fire survival calls, and fatal fires ( 2 units will attend a fatal fire)


- Firefighter emergency

What incidents with Fire investigation teams be informed of?

- Explosions


- A request for an ambulance from an incident where a fire related injury has occurred to a member of the public

What are the types of evidence a firefighter can identify?

1) Physical evidence - matches, petrol cans


2) Visual evidence - what did you see?


3) Audible evidence - what did you hear? e.g. explosions, windows breaking


4) Smell - did you smell traces of accelerant e.g. petrol

What actions are taken to preserve evidence during and after firefighting operations?

- minimise firefighting personnel inside affected area (conditions permitted)


- Limit water damage


- If body is found and is apparently dead, leave in-situ.


-Record locations and movements of all other persons involved


- Do not disturb room contents or debris


- Do not start cutting away or turning over until directed to do so by IC


- record any important information


- Turn fuse board off rather than remove fuses


- Eyewitnesses with relevant information should be directed to IC or police

When a person is found and it is obvious that life is extinct, what things should be done?

1. All info about body may be presented at an inquest and must be passed to police/ FIO


2. Body must be, if possible, left in place


3. If body must be moved due to worsening fire situation, the place where the body was found, position of body and any other info must be noted


4. Any items such as buttons/clothing etc that falls when body is moved, must be collected and handed to IC/police


5. CU carry a fatality identification system, which will be initiated by the IC when considered necessary


6. Info about bodies must not be given to unauthorised people
