Coast |
A narrow strip between land and sea |
Name the 4 processes of coastal erosion |
Hydraulic Action Corrasion/Abrasion Corrosion Attrition |
Hydraulic Action |
The pressure of water being thrown against the cliff by waves. (Hydraulic Pressure)Water compresses air into cracks in rocks breaking the rocks apart |
Corrasion/Abrasion |
Sand & Pebbles carried in the waves are thrown against the cliff causing errosion |
Corrasion |
Chemical reaction between some rocks and the salty sea water. The water dissolves the rock away. |
Attrition |
Wearing away of pebbles on the shore. As waves move in/out pebbles hit into one another. This chips pieces off and makes them smaller and smoother. |
4 processes of transport |
Traction Saltation Suspension Solution |
Traction |
Large pebbles role along the sea floor |
Saltation |
Small sand size particles bounce along the sea bed |
Suspension |
Small clay sized particles are floated in the water |
Solution |
Materials dissolved in water are carried |
3 types of mass movement |
Rock falls Land slumping Soil Creep |
3 types of weathering |
Exfoliation Solution Weathering Biological Weathering |
Exfoliation |
In the day when temperatures are high rocks heat up and expand At night in cooler temperature rock contracts Over time this causes the outer layer of rock to fall off |
Solution Weathering |
Rain water containing weak acid reacts with certain rocks like limestone/chalk The acid in rainwater dissolve away the rocks and it is carried away in solution |
Biological Weathering |
Plants and animals cause the break up of rock. When seeds fall in gaps in rocks and plants force there way through rocks causing them to crack. Burrowing animals can also add to this type of Weathering. |
