What is erosion? |
The transportation of weathered sediments. |
What are the agents of erosion? |
Water, wind, living things, glaciers, but the driving force behind these is gravity. |
Define erosion by water |
Rivers and streams can transport material, by dissolved salts in a solution, in a suspension, or carried by rolling, bouncing, sliding, or floating. |
What happens with erosion along a meandering channel? |
Velocity greatest on outside of curve results in more erosion. Velocity decreasing on the inside of the curve results in deposition. |
What is a river delta? |
When the water from a river slows down as it enters the ocean, it releases the sediment it has been carrying forming a delta. Mississippi delta is the most famous delta. |
Define erosion by wind |
As wind velocity increases, the size of the particles carried will increase. Ex: farmers used wind breaks to protect their crops and retain soil. |
Define erosion by living things. |
As animals carry out their life processes, they move earth's surface materials from one plate to another. |
Define erosion by glaciers |
Gravity causes glacier ice to flow, this forms U shaped valleys. It will deposit the material when it retreats. |
Name the features of eroded sediments. |
Streams: round and smooth, wind: angular sediments, glacial and gravity. |
