THE JAMES-LANGE THEORY OF EMOTION
Suggests that bodily responses evoke the emotional experience.
Therefore we experience fear because we perceive the body activity triggered by particular stimuli. |
THE CANNON-BARD THEORY OF EMOTION
Suggests that the brain must interpret the situation to decide which emotion is appropriate.
SCHACHTER'S COGNITIVE THEORY O EMOTION
Schachter's Cognitive Theory
Suggests that the intensity of emotion can be affected by the bodily response and that the brain continuously assesses the situation. |
HOW MANY EMOTION DO WE EXPERIENCE? (PLUTNIK)
8 different emotions or 4 paired opposites:
Joy Sadness Affection Disgust Anger Fear Expectation Surprise |
WHAT ARE THE FACIAL EXPRESSIONS THAT ARE CONSIDERED UNIVERSAL
Accourding to Ekman and Keltner (2000)
Anger, Disgust, Sadness, Surprise, Happiness, Contempt, Fear, Embarrassment |
BELL'S PALSEY
• Viral infection in the facial nerve
• Usually affects just one side • Results in drooping eyelid and mouth • No cure but most recover after a few weeks |
WHAT AREAS OF THE BRAIN ARE INVOLVED IN POSITIVE EMOTION?
Positive brain sites are concentrated in the hypothalamas & extend to the brainstem
The Medial Forebrain Bundle- a collection of axons traveling in the midline region of the forebrain. One important target for axons in the nucleus accombens.Dopaminergenic stimulation of this appears to be very pleasurable |
PAPEZ EMOTIONAL CIRCUIT
A group of brain regions within the limbic system.
These interconnected regions known as the Papez circuit include mammillary bodies of the: 1. Hypothalamus 2. Anterior Thalamus 3. Cingulate Cortex 4. Hippocampus 5. Fornix Later the Amydala and other regions were added. These regions are now known as the Limbic System. |
THE LIMBIC SYSTEM
Loosely defined, widespread group of brain nuclei that innervate each other to form a network. The nuclei are implicated in emotions.

KLUVER BUCY SYNDROME
Removed large part of the temporal lobes, found monkey's behavior dramatically changed after surgery.
Surgery had taming effect- no longer fearful of humans.Strong oral tendency- eating things they didn’t eat before.Hyper sexuality was another effect. Why did this happen? Amygdala- group of nuclei in the medial anterior part of the temporal lobe. Animals with amygdale lesions appeared to be much less fearful than control monkeys. |
AMYGDALA
group of nuclei in the medial anterior part of the temporal lobe
