Epithelium tissue

Lining and covering tissues.


-covers exposed surfaces


-lines internal passageways/chambers


-produces glandular secretions



-made of sheet cells (think ceramic floor tiles, tightly packed.

Free surface

The surface of the epithelium which is exposed to either the external environment or an internal passageway/cavity.

Avascular

Tissue that do not contain blood vessels.



Epithelium is a surface and a lining tissue, and therefore does not contain blood vessels and is considered avascular.


Instead, the avascular epithelium obtains nutrients through diffusion of substances from connective tissue underlying the epithelium.

Definition, and how they obtain nutrients

Basal lamina

Where the epithelium is attached to the body, between the epithelium and its connective tissue layer.

Simple epithelium

Single layer of epithelium.


-provides surface for exchange of materials (i.e. gas exchange between lungs and blood).

Stratified epithelium

Located at body surfaces exposed to external environment.


-protect against friction


-prevent dehydration


-keep microbes and chemicals from invading the body.

Transitional epithelium

Special stratified epithelium with many different shapes, allowing tissue to stretch and recoil

Pseudostratified epithelium

All cells touch the basal lamina, but grow at different heights.


-taller cells grow to cover shorter cells, preventing them from reaching free surface.

Squamous

Squama - scale


Irregular shape, flat and scale like.


Depending on organization, can be meant for protection or secretion/diffusion.

Cuboidal

Cubic. (cross section approximately square) have large nucleus.


Found in tubeless of kidneys and many glands.


-secrete and absorb material across tubular/glandular wall.

Columnar

Taller than they are wide.

Simple squamous epithelium

Thin tissue resuming ceramic floor tiles.


In serous membranes, it is called mesothelium.


In locations where it lines blood vessels and heart chambers, it is called endothelium.


Also is the thin walls of air sacs in lungs.

Simple cuboidal epithelium

For absorption sand secretion, found in the kidney tubeless, thyroid and other glands.


Transverse sections : form circular walls around tubule.


Longitudinal section : appear as 2 rows of square cells.


Basal lamina is conspicuous.

Simple columnar epithelium

Lines most of the digestive tract and the uterine walls, and renal collecting ducts.


In small intestine, wall is folded and covered with this to increase surface area for digestion/absorption.


In uterine walls, cilia move the released eggs into uterus.
