What are Communication Skills?

Verbal and non-verbal phrases, voice tones, facial expression, gestures and body language used in interaction between persons.

The Sender

He/she wants to share information that's in his mind, and the information has to go from the sender's mind to the receiver's mind.

The Receiver

He/she is the person that the sender is trying to communicate with. The receiver has to hear, listen and give feedback.

The Message

A mixture of thoughts, feelings, words and meanings.

Why do communication problems arise?

Because people think communication is simple

The Signal

How we encode the message in our head and broadcast it to the receiver. It is more than how words sound; includes feeling, attitudes and personality.

The Feedback

The receiver's response sent back to the sender

What is the purpose of interpreting the feedback?

Interpretation of the feedback lets the sender know if the receiver understands his/her message.

What is the shared understanding?

The degree to which someone understands what we are trying to communicate.

What does shared understanding depend on?

Similarity between the sender & receiver; Shared experiences (similar backgrounds); Similarity/Dissimilarity of language skills, attitudes, beliefs; Assumptions of each other.

What is noise?

Any part of the communication process that diminishes shared understanding.

What is hearing?

A function carried out by our brain, wherein the sound received by our ears are assigned meaning.

What's the difference between listening and hearing?

With hearing, your BRAIN understands what is being said. With listening, your MIND understands what is being said.

Why is there a Listening//Hearing Disparity?

The cycle of Lack of interest and Pre-Judging causes this. Lack of interest leads to Pre-Judging (hence, no listening occurs) and Pre-Judging leads to Lack of interest (hence, no listening occurs).
