Programme of National Action Against Desertification
What are the aims of the National Hydrological Plan? and when was it adopted?
In 2001
-Transferring water with plentiful supply to areas with little
-Building desalinisation plants at a cost of 1.2B euros
-Improving infrastructure to reduce wastage(aim to reduce water used by 10% yet increase land irrigated by 7% - 2002)
-Promoting awareness schemes on efficient use of resources
What are the main issues with NHP in Spain that make it so controversial?
-Expensive
-Not all elements are sustainable (transporting water is not a long-term solution)
Name two other strategies aside from the NHP that are in place to reduce desertification.
-Forest fire defence plans
-Official water trading scheme
Describe either the forest fire scheme or water trading scheme in more detail.
Forest Fire:
High risk areas identified and defence plans drawn up, destroyed areas to be reforested (since it started 550,000ha have been restored)

Water:
Trading scheme aimed to reduces black market sales. Water costs 3x normal price yet still cheaper than black market. Reduces illegal exploitation of aquifers and promotes sustainable use of them.
Describe briefly the Sunseed Project in Almeria.
An independently run project that adopts several methods of sustainable farming in Southern Spain.
-Drip irrigation system, reducing evaporation and water usage.
-Covering of soil with mooch(organic matter) stops evap, improves soil structure, improves ability to store water, stops rain splash erosion.
