Describe the Representational Model of Perception
According to the RMP, the immediate objects of our perception is an idea or image in our minds which is caused by a physical object outside our mind. As such, we never directly perceive the world outside our minds, only images or representations by our sensory organs.
Rationalism
Knowledge founded in reason. The idea that some ideas represent reality more closely. Rationalist can only tell you what's inside your mind but does not tell you what exist outside your mind.
Empiricism
Knowledge founded in experience. The analysis of the experience or contents of your mind will solve the skeptical question of the RMP.
What does Kant argue about Rationalism and Empiricism
Rationalist are overly confident about their ability to demonstrate what reality must be like and Empiricist are equally mistaken to believe that all knowledge is reducible to experience. However, Kant wants to use what's useful in both arguments to create a new approach at solving the skeptical world problem.
Metaphysics
Branch of philosophy which inquires into the nature of reality. Ex: what kinds of things exist? "I see a table" is not a metaphysical claim.
What does Kant think about metaphysical judgments?
To Kant, metaphysical judgements must be about something other than what is presented to us via experience.
Noumenal Realm
the world as it is apart from experience.
Phenomenal realm
Kant's description of the world as it presents itself to us in experience.
A priori truths
Truths prior to experience. Truths are a priori if experience is unnecessary to establish their truth value.
A posteriori truths
truths grounded in experience. Ex: Kangaroos live in Australia.
