Skeletal System- bones in the body.

• Protect internal organs

• Provide a framework of support for the body.

• Store calcium

• Produce blood cells

Joint

two or more bones meet together.

diaphysis

epiphyses

Two main parts of the long bone.

Periosteum

Outermost layer of the bone. It’s that hard layer that you can see on the bone, and it’s made up of fibrous tissue.

Compact bone

Found under the periosteum and made up of hard layers of bone tissue

Cancellous bone, or “spongy bone”

Bone containing little spaces that look like a sponge; found inside layers of the compact bone

Endosteum

Membrane that lines the hollow cavity of a bone

Bone marrow

Found in the cavities of bones. There are two types of bone marrow: red and yellow. Red bone marrow is thick material where blood cells are formed. It’s found in flat bones and the ends of long bones. Yellow marrow is a softer, fatty material. It’s found in the medullary cavity, or the inner part, of long bones

Maxilla

Upper jaw bone

Scapula

Shoulder blade

Sternum

Breastbone

Xiphoid process

Lower portion of the sternum.

Ulna and radius

Lower arm bones

Olecranon process

Projection at the upper end of the ulna that forms the bony point of the elbow

Vertebral Column

Different bones, called vertebrae, through which the spinal cord runs

Cervical vertebrae (abbreviated as C1 to C7)

First set of seven bones, which form the neck

Thoracic vertebrae (abbreviated as T1 to T12)

Second set of 12 vertebrae that articulate, or join, with the 12 pairs of ribs to form the outward curve of the spine

Lumbar vertebrae (abbreviated as L1 to L5)

Third set of the five larger vertebrae, which form the inward curve of the spine

Coccyx

Four vertebrae fused together to form the tailbone
