Description

Non-steroidal analgesic and antipyretic

Class

non-opiod analgesia

Indications

Mild to moderate pain and fever

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity, previous doses within 4 hours or more than 4 grams ingested in <24 hours

Pharmacokinetics

Onset: 10-60 minutes - Peak: variable - Duration: 4 hours

Adverse effects

Nausea and GI irritation

Precaution

Dehydration and patients with suspected liver or renal disease




May be combined with codeine or other opiates in certain medications

Mechanism of action

Inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes resulting in subsequent reduction of prostaglandin signalling in the CNS to produce analgesic, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory effects
