Chronotropic drugs
affect the rate of the heart, they can either increase (positive affect)or decrease (negative affect)the heart rate.
Inotropic drugs
Affects the force of contraction positive or negative
Dromotropic drugs
alters the rhythm or electrical conduction through the heart muscle. negative slow conduction. positive enhance conduction
The heart is devided into how many chambers?
4 chambers.
2 atrial (upper) 2 ventricles (lower) |
Left side chambers carries what?
Oxygen rich blood to the body.
Right side chambers carries what?
De-oxygenated blood to the lungs.
Describe systemic circulation.
Heart to body back to heart
Describe pulmonary criculation
heart to lungs back to heart
Name the 4 heart valves
Mitral
Tricuspid Aortic semilunar Pulmonary semilunar |
Describe the cardiac conduction process.
SA node to AV node to the Bundle of HIS to the Branches to the Perjunkle
ECG tracing
P wave= arterial depolarization.
QRS wave=Ventricular depolarization. T wave= repolarization of ventricles. |
Define Arrythmia
Abnormal heart rhythm
Define Proarrythmia
Drug induced arrythmia
Digoxin
Lanoxin
Inhibits sodium/potassium exchange pump increased Ca will increase contractility of the heart. 1/2 life is 36 hours or longer. Does not convert Atrial Fibrillation to norm sinus, but does slow the ventricular rate. side effect: anorexia visual disturbances fatigue |
Adenosine
Adenocard
used for supraventricular tachycardias. Slows the conduction through the AV and SA nodes. Used as an IV and has a very short half life. Theophilline blocks the electrophysiological effects of adenosine. |
Heart failure (HF)
also referred to as CHF occurs when ventricles are not able to pump enough blood.
The loss of contractility makes the blood volume increase within the heart and enlarges the heart. This means that there is a decrease of cardiac output. Can cause kidneys to retain water and cause edema. |
Digoxin for HF
Inotropes increase the peak tension produced by heart during systolic contraction.
Allows the heart to pump more effectively. Digoxin will increase cardiac contractility, so the heart will pump more strongly. |
