Identifying Anions (-ve)

▷Carbonate ion


Add dilute hydrochloric acid. Gas given off into limewater Effervescence is observed. Gas given off forms white ppt. Carbon dioxide is given off.


Nitrate ion


Add sodium hydroxide then add a piece of aluminium foil. Warm the mixture. Test the hassle with moist Red litmus paper Effervescence is formed. Moist Red litmus paper turns blue. Ammonia gas given off.


Sulfate ion


Add nitric acid, then Add barium nitrate solution White ppt of barium sulfate formed


Chloride ion


Add nitric acid then Add silver nitrate solution White ppt of silver chloride formed


▷Iodide ion


◑Add nitric acid and Add silver nitrate solution ◈Yellow ppt of iodide formed.

Identifying gases

Tests for Water

▷Heat sample in test tube. Place piece of cobalt (II) chloride at mouth of test tube ◇Cobalt (II) chloride paper changes from blue to pink.


▷Add few drops of sample to some anhydrous copper (II) sulfate ◇Anhydrous copper (II) sulfate changes from white to blue
