Naturalistic Observation- behavior in it's environment as it occurs naturally
|
Advantages:
Provides first hand, accurate information. The behavior is more natural, spontaneous and varied. |
Limitations:
The behavior may be influenced by the presence of the observer. This observer may have a preexisting bias. It is unclear whether the observations may be generalized to other situations. |
|
Case Studies- in depth study of one or a few people
|
Advantages:
Yields detailed descriptive information |
Limitations:
It may not be a representative sample and may be time consuming and expensive. The observer may be biased. |
|
Surveys- standard question sets that are administered to a large number of participants
|
Advantages:
Large amounts of data are gathered quickly and inexpensively. |
Limitations:
There may be sampling biases. There also may be ambiguity in questions and results. The subjects must be willing to participate. |
|
Correlation Research- employs statistical methods to examine the relationship between two or more variables
|
Advantages:
Clarifies relationships between variables and allows prediction of behavior. |
Limitations:
There can be no cause-and-effect conclusions drawn. |
|
Experimental Research- One or more variables are systematically manipulated, and the effect of that manipulation on other variables is studied
|
Advantages:
Allows researchers to draw conclusions about cause-and-effect relationships |
Limitations:
The artificiality may influence subjects' behavior. Many variables may not be expected or controlled. |
