Welding symbol

Is a graphic symbol that shows weld locations and specifications on prints

They have been developed and standardized by the AWS

Weld joint

Physical configuration of the joint members to be joined

Butt joint

A weld joint formed when two joint members located in approximately the same plane are positioned edge to edge


Commonly used in sub assemblies and during fabrication and repair operations

Lap joint

Is a weld joint formed when two joint members are lapped over one another

Stronger than a butt joint but results in added thickness

Commonly welded both sides used for repairs and to extend material lengths

T joint

A weld formed when the edges of two or more joint members are positioned approximately 90 degrees to one another in the form of a T

Commonly used in fabricating support structures where the load is transferred to different planes

Edge joint

A weld formed when the edges of two or more joint members are parallel to or nearly parallel to one another

Commonly used to join straight or flanged members and to combine strength of members with exposed edges

Corner joint

A weld joint formed when two joint members are positioned at approximately 90degrees with the weld joint at the outside of the joint members


Commonly used in tank and pressure vessel construction, filler metal may or may not be necessary

Weld type

The cross-sectional shape of the filler metal after welding

Groove weld

A weld type made in the groove of the welded pieces

Typically used on butt joints and can be customized for specific needs

Base metal

Material to be welded

Filler metal

The metal to be added while making a weld

Weld metal

Metal in the completed weld consisting of the base metal and filler metal that was melted during welding

Weld face

The exposed surface of the weld bounded by the weld toes as viewed from the side on which the welding was done.

Weld toe

The intersection of the base metal and the weld face

Weld root

The area where the weld metal intersects the base metal opposite the weld face, the intersection of the base metals.

Root surface

The surface of the weld on the opposite side of the joint on which welding was done

Face reinforcement

Weld metal that extends above the surface of the joint members on the side of the joint on which welding was done

Root reinforcement

Weld metal that extends above the surface of the joint on the opposite side of the joint on which welding was done

Fusion

The melting together of the filler metal and base metals

Groove weld shapes

Fillet weld

A weld type in the cross-sectional shape of a triangle

Used to join members that are at right angles to each other like in T or lap joints

Plug weld/slot welds

weld type in the cross-sectional shape of a hole/slot (elongated hole) in one of the members

Commonly used during repair operations and to extend material lengths

Stud weld

A weld type produced by joining threaded studs with other parts with heat and pressure

Spot, projection and seam welds

Welds produced by fusion between or on joint members using heat and pressure

Spot welds are circular in shape

Projection welds are performed through preformed dimples or projections on one of the members

Seam weld weld that forms a series of cont or overlapping successive spot welds

Back weld

A weld deposited after the primary weld, in the weld root opposite the face of the primary weld.

You will need to back gouge or prepare the material before performing this weld

Backing weld

weld deposited before the primary weld in the weld root.

A weld bead deposited on a surface to increase the dimensions of the part or to add special properties to the part

Faying surface

The part of the joint members that are in full contact prior to welding, riveting or bolting

Edge weld

A weld in an edge joint, flanged butt joint or flanged corner joint in which the weld fusion includes the full thickness of the joint members

Welding symbols

The information needed to perform a weld as provided on prints. This includes location, type, size, process and examination procedures.

Arrow (welding symbol)

Part of the welding symbol that identifies the location of weld and if the leader has breaks it will identify which member gets the specified preparation if any



Multiple arrows can be used to specify similar welds at different locations

Reference line

The part of the welding symbol that specified which side of the joint is to be welded



Arrow side below the line and other side above the line



Multiple lines can be used to indicate separate operations and sequence of those operations (the operation closest to the arrowhead is performed first)

Weld symbol

A graphic representation that defines the cross-sectional shape of a weld

Tail

Part of welding symbol included when a specific detail(s) must be indicated for that specific weld

Supplementary symbols

Symbol added to welding symbols to provide further information about the weld to be performed.

Adhesion

Joining together of materials along faying surfaces by the bonding action of an outside material, no fusion occurs



Common uses include brazed or glued joints

NDE non destructive examination

A symbol that specifies examination methods and requirements to verify weld quality

Actual throat

The shortest distance between the weld root and the face of a fillet weld.
