Why is the UN important for world peace?

1. They impose sanctions on countries threatening world peace.


2. They can authorise the use of force by member states.


3. They can send a peace keeping force to: a) prevent the outbreak of conflict b) stabilise conflict situations to bring about a lasting peace agreement. c) bring about stable government (based on democracy and economic development) in conflict areas.

Why did the UN become involved in Kosovo?

Because when the Kosovars tried to gain independence from Serbia, they failed. Serbia then sent an army into Kosovo to begin a campaign of ethnic cleansing against Kosovar Albanians. Hundreds died in the conflict and after NATO drove the Serbians away, the UN took over.

How did the UN deal with Kosovo?

They sent a peace keeping force to Kosovo to protect ethnic Albanians from the Serbian army and has kept the peace for over nine years and helped establish a democratic Kosovar state.

How do religious organisations work for peace?

1. They organise meeting so people learn about the horrors of wars and vote for political parties working for peace .


2. They organise protests about war like the Iraq war to change public opinion and therefore government policy.


3. They organise and attend interfaith conferences to help all religions work together to promote world peace.


4. They work for economic justice and worldwide acceptance of human rights to remove the causes of war. If the poor of the world had a decent standard of living, and all governments respected human rights this could stop many wars.

Why do wars occur? : Religion

1. If the followers of a religion are being badly treated in a country, followers in another country may invade to protect them. For example, Serbia invaded Kosovo to protect the Orthodox Christians from the Muslim majority.


2. Most of a country is one religion, but an area of a country can have a different one. Like the Muslims of Kashmir are fighting to leave India to become part of Muslim Pakistan.


3. When there is differences within a religion, one religious group attacks the other for having individual beliefs. Like the historic battles between Protestants and Catholics.

Why do wars occur? : Nationalism and ethnicity

1. The belief that each separate ethnic group should have its own country leads to wars like the ethnic Albanians in Kosovo.


2. This could also lead to the belief that any minority ethnic groups should be removed from the country as happened in Rwanda in 1994.


3. Where countries were created artificially, tensions between ethnic groups can lead to civil wars. Sudan and Kenya were created artificially by European conquers, leading to the current war in Darfur.

Why do wars occur?: Ideological and political differences

1. In the Democratic Republic of Congo two different political groups are fighting for power. The UN is trying to bring peace but the conflict has become very serious.


2. The Korean war began in 1949 when communist North Korea invaded capitalist South Korea. The UN sent a force to protect them and a truce was declared in 1953 but there still is no peace.

What are the generally agreed points that make a war just?

1. It is being fought by the authority of the UN.


2. It is being fought with the intention to bring peace back.


3. It is begun as a last resort and all other way of resolving it have been tried and failed.


4. There is a reasonable chance of success.


5. The methods used avoid killing civilians.


6. The methods used are proportional to the cause.

What are the two different Christian attitudes to war? Explain them.

1. Christian pacifists refuse to fight in wars▪Jesus said Christians should love their enemies and turn the other cheek when attacked. ▪The 5th commandment says "do not kill". ▪Jesus would not let Peter fight back when he was being arrested. ▪Horrible things happen to innocent civilians in modern wars so they can never be justified. ▪They believe peace can only come when people refuse to fight


2. Many Christians believe they should be prepared to fight in a just war: ▪It is the teaching of most of the Churches. ▪St Paul said that Christians have to obey the orders of the government,so Christians should fight in the wars in which they are ordered. ▪Jesus said do not condemn soldiers, he actually praised the faith of a Roman centurion. ▪They believe that if they need a police force to protect innocent civilians, we need armed forces to protect innocent states against criminal ones.

Why do Muslims believe they should fight in Just wars?

They believe in peace that if Islam is being attacked, Muslims must defend their faced by fighting jihad.

3. There are many hadith from Muhammed saying Muslims should fight in Just wars.


4. The Qur'an says that a Muslim that dies in a just war will go straight to heaven.


However some feel that the nature of modern weapons means no war can be just, so they oppose wars.

Why are Christians against bullying?

1. They regard using aggression or violence without a just cause a sinful.


2. Christians believe people are a creation of God and made in his image. Bullying is wrong as it mistreats God's creation.


3. It is the duty of Christians to protect the weak and innocent like in the Parable of the Good Samaritan, but bullies do the opposite.


4. Jesus taught that Christians should treat anyone in trouble as if they were him. No one would bully Jesus so they shouldn't bully anyone.


5. All Christian churches teach that Christians should protect human rights so they should not bully as this denied the victim's rights.

Why are Muslims against bullying?

1. Islamic society is based on respect between the members of society. Bullies have no respect for people and so do not understand Islamic society.


2. Islam regards using violence without a just cause a sinful.


3. Any Muslim who bullies a fellow Muslim is acting against the ummah.


4. It is the duty of Muslims to protect the weak and innocent but bullies do the opposite so must be wrong.

1. Religions tell parents to bring their children up in a faith and make sure they become full members of it as adults.


2. Parents worry that without religion their children will become immoral.


3. Parents worry they won't see their children in the after life.

1. Often there will be no religious ceremony if they are of different religions and some religions demand this.

1. If the child wants to have a low- paid job as a minister or priest, they won't be able to marry.

1. A Catholic could decide to divorce and marry someone else.
