erosion
-the transport of weathered rock (weathering and erosion change the shape of the land)
flowing water
-BIGGEST CAUSE OF ROCK EROSION
-where rainwater carries sediments into streams and rivers; moving water then flows downhill and carries sediment along and gets dropped off in a new place -also includes waves that break rocks apart and carry rocks and sand to a new place |
wind
-ANOTHER CAUSE OF ROCK EROISION
-wind picks up small pieces of rock, sand and soil and carries them to other places -wind weathers rock by abrasion |
deposition
-dropping off of weathered rock
-(bits of rock, sand, and soil are picked up and transported by wind or water and dropped off) -rivers and streams DEPOSIT sediments along their banks, or sides, or at the mouth, or ends, of rivers. |
What affects erosion?
-size of sediments, strength of wind and water (can make it occur more quickly), plants
(size: pieces of sand can be blown or washed away more easily than pebbles) |
the Dust Bowl (an example of extreme erosion)
-started in 1920's & after a few years soil was overused and in 1930 a drought began with little rain for nearly 10 years
-crops would not grow & soil became bare and exposed to strong winds -without plants to hold soil in place, the dry soil began to blow away -terrible dust storms took place with thick, black clouds of dust swirling for many miles, called "black blizzards" -people had to leave their homes and forced to move west -occurred in parts of west, midwest and southwest in middle of country |
How can soil erosion be slowed?
-Conserve soil by using methods to save it like STRIP FARMING and CONTOUR PLOWING
strip farming
-planting crops in strips
-one strip has plants to hold the soil and the next strip is planted with a food crop -the next year the strips are changed |
contour plowing
-used on land that slopes
-farmers plow fields across a slope , rather than up and down and the shape of the plowed land prevents soil from eroding |
