What is the difference between SONAR and the doppler effect?

Sonar is a technique that uses echoes (sound waves) to find distances, depth, and density of water. The doppler effect is the apparent change in the frequency of waves - the pitch does not change, the waves spread out.

What are waves and how are they measured?

Waves are disturbances that moves through matter (medium) or space. Waves can be described by their wavelengths, energy, and frequency. Wavelengths are measured in meters, energy (intensity) is measured in decibels, and frequency is measured in Hertz (Hz).

What is the difference between reflection, refraction, and diffraction?

Reflection is when a wave bounces back, refraction is when a wave changes direction, and diffraction is the bending of waves around an object.

What are electromagnetic waves?

Electromagnetic waves are waves that can travel through matter or through empty space; they do not require a medium to travel through.

What is the difference between a transverse and a longitudinal wave and describe their parts.

Transverse wave particles move up and down and longitudinal wave particles move back and forth.

What is the difference between being farsighted and being nearsighted?

Farsighted is the result of the eyeball being too short, objects far away are clear, but object nearby cannot be focused on. Nearsighted is the result of the eyeball being too long, objects nearby are clear, but objects far away are blurry.

Compare and contrast amplitude, frequency, intensity, and pitch.

Amplitude is the height of a wave. Frequency is the amount of waves that pass a certain point each second. Intensity if the amount of energy a wave carries. Pitch is the human perception of frequency.

Intensity is measured in decibels and pitch (frequency) is measured in Hertz (Hz).

Compare and contrast sound waves and light waves.

Sound waves are longitudinal waves and require a medium to travel through. Sound waves are slower than light waves. The more dense a medium is, the faster sound travels. Light waves are transverse waves that do not require a medium to travel through (can travel through empty space). The more dense a medium is, the slower light travels. Nothing is faster than light.

What are echoes?

Echoes are sounds that reflect off surfaces.

What is an ultrasonic sound?

An ultrasonic sound is a sound that is above 20,000 Hertz (frequency).

Why is the density of an object and the speed of sound related?

They are related because the denser an object is, the faster sound travels. Higher density = high speed, lower density = low speed.

Why are pitch and frequency related?

They are related because pitch is the human perception of frequency (high and low).

Why are amplitude and intensity related?

They are related because low amplitude equals low intensity, and high amplitude equals high intensity.
