Steam-water cyle

A cycle where heat energy converted to steam energy then mechanical energy

1. Boiler

2. Turbine

3. Condenser

4. Boiler feed pump

Major equipments of steam cycle

Boiler

Where is the steam-water cycle start?

Condenser

Where is the lowest point of pressure in the steam-water cycle?

Boiler

An heat exchanger used to gradually raise the water temperature until it becomes superheated steam

Economizer

First step in water temperature ladder. Used to heat feedwater entering the boiler.

Steam drum

After leaving the economizer the water enters ______? The water and steam leaves through the top of this drum. This is where the steam separator and steam dryer are located.

Downcomer tubes

Located outside or near the outside of the boiler as it is desirable to pickup much heat.

Drum manifold

Acts as a distribute points rather than a place for solids to collect

Natural circulation

Circulation is created when one side of this circuit is heated

Controlled circulation

A circulation where the water in the downcomers is forced through the water walls of the boiler. It has boiler water circulating pump in the downcomer.

Water wall tubes

The second step in water temperature ladder. It is the primary steam generator and the heat transfer here is by radiation.

Primary superheater

The first step in the ladder of superheating. Located near the end of the flue gas path just before the economizer. It is in the conduction zone.

Headers

It is a collection & distributing place. It's like a drum.

Conduction zone

The area in the flue gas path that is out of the direct rays of fire.

Secondary superheater

The second step in the ladder of steam. This superheater heats steam to final temperature before sending it to the turbine.

Pendant superheaters

Used in most modern boilers. It is hung from the roof of the boiler down into the furnace.

Pendant platen superheaters

A pendat superheater that has tubes arranged side to side to form a wall. The individual tube bundles are called platens.

Radiant superheater

It is hung out in the primary furnace exposed to the fire, and forms part of the furnace wall.

Reheater

This is where the steam that partially used by the turbine is sent back to the boiler and reheated.

Cold reheat line

Line from the turbine going to the boiler for reheating.

Hot reheat line

Line from the boiler going to the turbine after reheating.

Once through boiler

A boiler with a long continuous tube with heat added all along the tube length. No boiler drum.
