TAOISM: Describe the Chinese concepts of yin and yang. How does the concept of yin and yang relate to Qi?

A balance between yin and yang explains the true nature of the universe. The yin was the negative force in nature and the yang was the positive force. The interaction between the two is one of the factors in the operation of the universe. Qi is vital life forces within humans and nature. Yin and yang are the types of energy (the Qi) within the universe and all of life.

How does the Chinese concept of yin and yang relate to the concept of the Tao?

In order to achieve Tao, yin and yang must be balanced. So, in order to live in harmony and a simple life one must have a balance between these two forces.

The theme of the Tao Te Ching is that all human achievements are folly, especially elaborate government. They believe government should be simple and people are not as important as religion.

|
The Tao Te Ching says that we should live life as simply as possible. The Taoists looked upon the innocence of the child as an ideal towards which all human beings should strive. The infant has no ambitions but to live.

Confucians dreamed of a restored idealized form of feudalism as the best government. . Believe that the best societies are those that are most structured. They believed it was the feudal model that best described the concept of the five relationships. In such a state, people respect their elders and superiors, making these relationships successful.

Describe the concept of Li and Jen and how these ideals relate to the idea of good government.
|
Li is the idea of order, it can be seen as "the course of life as it is intended to go." Jen is the inner attitude of Li, revolving around goodness and love. When society lives by Li and Jen, it moves smoothly. With Li, people are able to understand the social order. Naturally, all people know their superiors and inferiors and are able to act in the manner that Confucius believed was necessary for good government.

Discuss the origins and development of Confucianism. What were the contributions of Confucius, Mencius, and Hsun Tzu?
|
When Confucius dies, his teachings were only remembered and followed by a small group of disciples. However, during the next 500 years the disciples of Confucius trained and advised the rulers of China, to such an extent that his teachings became an integral part of Chinese culture. Mencius helped to develop Confucianism and believed that we are all good people and have the ability to be perfect. Hsun Tzu saw the opposite and believed that people are basically evil.
