What is Sound? |
Sound is a periodic variation of atmospheric pressure. |
Compression |
Area of higher than normal atmospheric pressure. |
Rarefaction |
Area of lower than normal atmospheric pressure. |
Amplitude |
The Distance above or below the center line. Amplitude is measured in decibels (dB) |
Frequency |
The amount of waves per second (Or cycles per second). Frequency is measured in Hertz (Hz) |
C.P.S (Cycles Per Second) |
100 C.P.S = 100 Hz 1000 Hz = 1 Kilo Hz 2500 Hz = 2.5 Kilo Hz 10,000 Hz = 10 Kilo Hz |
Human hearing range |
Humans can hear 20 Hz --> 20 kHz Humans have a sensitivity to hearing from 1 kHz to 4 kHz. 1. It's the frequency at which babies cry. 2. The intelligibility range of human speech. |
Phase |
The relationship between 2 identical wave forms. When 2 identical wave forms are perfectly in phase, their combined output doubles. When 2 wave forms are 180 degrees out of sync they are equal to 0 |
Speed of Sound |
1,130 feet per second 100 Hz measures 11.3ft 1kHz = 1.13ft |
D.A.W. |
Digital Audio Workstation (Pro Tools) |
Sample Rate |
The amount of times the computer records the incoming sound per second. |
Post production standard |
48 kHz 44.1 kHz 96 kHz 48 kHz 192 kHz |
Nyquist Theorem |
In order to record the highest desired frequency sample rate must be twice as high as that frequency. |
Bit Depth |
Amplitude component The more Bits the more sound level |
A|D D|A Converter |
Analog to Digital vice versa. |
Latency |
The time it takes to record and playback the digital audio. |
Jitter |
When sample rates aren't spaced evenly |
Pro Tools has two main windows |
- Edit - Mix |
Transient Noises |
They clip but don't register. Distortion is above the red mark for a long period of time. Clipping is it taps the red marker. |
Option |
Is a global modifier |
Foley |
First person to add sound to movies (multiple tracks) Performed sound effects |
Timecode |
Smpte |
Pro Tools 4 main modes of operations |
Shuffle F1 Spot F3 Slip F2 Grid F4 |
When importing sound |
Always copy/convert never add |
Shuffle Mode |
Snaps audio files together (Most dangerous mode in the whole wide world. It'll bleep your face) |
F5 -> 10 |
F5 - Zoom F6- Clipping Tool F7- Select Tool F8- Grab Tool F9- Scubber Tool F10- Pencil Tool |
B Command, H |
B- Cut Command, H - Heal Cut |
Pro Tools has 3 main modes of playback |
Timeline insertion follows playback N - on/off Command, K (pre-roll on/off) or command, 1 num pad Link timeline and edit, Shift forward slash |
Sizing Tracks |
F7 -> hold control -> arrow up or down to size |
Hard Cut |
jump the cut, 3 frames before and 3 frames after |
Ambiance |
Should sit in lower 1/3 when mixing |
Snapping |
Control, click w/grabber -> snaps to beginning of clip Control, command click w/ grabber -> snaps to end of clip |
