Quick reminder: what are the parts to the following sentence:
Compré los libros anoche. -->I brought the books last night. |
Subject: Yo (implied)
Conjugated Verb: compré Direct-object: los libros *subject + verb + what? or who? = direct object subject did something to what/who --> the answer = direct-object |
|
In order to avoiding repeating the direct-object, use the following d-o pronouns:
me, te, lo/la, nos, los/las |
Use the correct one based what you want to substitute for:
me = me te = you lo = you (formal), him, it (masculine) la = you (formal), her, it (feminine) nos = us los = them (people, things), you all las = them (people, things), you all, when all are feminine. |
|
In a sentence with one verb, the D.O.P. goes before the verb.
Therefore using the earlier sentence: Compré los libros anoche. |
(Yo) los compré anoche.
--> I brought them last night. |
|
Negative sentence:
the "no" goes before the D.O.P. |
(Yo) no los compré anoche.
--> I did not buy them last night. |
|
If a sentence has more than one verb you have a choice.
Such as in: Tú quieres lavar las ropas nuevas. |
1) Tú las quieres lavar.
--> before the first verb 2) Tú quieres lavarlas. -->attach to the infinite verb Both mean the same thing: "You want to wash them." |
|
Quick review: gerunds.
|
Verbs that end in:
-ando -iendo -yendo Causes verb to have "-ing" ending |
|
In a sentence with a gerund, the D.O.P. can be attached to the gerund which would require adding accents to the verb:
|
-ando
-->ándo- -iendo -->iéndo- -yendo -->yéndo- |
|
Él está cocinando la cena.
-->He is cooking the dinner. |
1) Él la está cocinando.
--> placed before 2) Él está cocinándola. --> attached to the gerund Both mean "He is cooking it." |
