Decomposer

An organism which consumes organic waste, reducing it so it can be used again by living things.

Pond

An area where the soil is either underwater or water soaked for all or part of the year.

Food Web

Interconnected food chains in an ecosystem.

Community

All the living organisms present in an ecosystem.

Adaptation

A physical or behavioural feature of an organism that increases its chance of survival.

Primary Consumer

Animals which consume plants; herbivore like deer and mice

Organic Waste

The decaying or decayed matter from once living organisms.

Scavenger

A species that feeds on dead or decaying organic matter

Submerged Plants

Water plants that are completely below the water.

Ecosystem

The relationship of living organisms between themselves and the non-living environment in a specific area.

Carnivore

Meat eaters

Herbivore

Plant eaters

Omnivore

Plant and meat eaters

Aquatic Zone

The area below the high water mark. In this area the water levels change both seasonally and annually. Within this zone, three distinctive types of plants grow – emergent, (out of water) submergent (below water) and floating.

Emergent Plants

An emergent plant is one which grows in water but which pierces the surface so that it is partially in air.

Food Chain

A food chain is the sequence of who eats whom in a biological community (an ecosystem) to obtain nutrition.

Producer

Plants are called producers. This is because they produce their own food! They do this by using light energy from the sun, carbon dioxide from the air and water from the soil to produce food - in the form of glucouse/sugar. The process is called photosynthesis.

Predator

A predator is an animal that eats other animals, and the prey is the animal that gets eaten by the predator.

What types of things do Primary Consumers eat?

They are herbivores, they will eat plants like algae, cattails, duckweed

Explain why there are more producers than Secondary Consumers in an ecosystem.

Secondary consumers eat primary consumers and primary consumers eat plants. There must be more plants for the system to work. Plants produce and reproduce quickly.

Pollution in the wetlands is a problem. Give an example of a type of pollution you might find there and tell what you can do to help solve this problem.

DDT, garbage, factory run-off – clean up garbage, write letters, be heard

Explain the difference between and Food Chain and a Food Web

A food chain is direct and a web is a bunch of chains combined.

Explain an adaptation for one of these species: duck, frog, or waterstrider.

Duck: webbed feet, swim quickly Frog: webbed feet, breathable skin Waterstrider: hairs on leg/feet – to stay on water surface
