Blocks transport of iodide from serum to thyroid tissue. Found in certain foods and cigarette smoke. Can be used to tx hyperthyroidism.
Thiocynate, "jim jones effect"
Blocks iodide transport from serum to thyroid tissues. 10x more active as cyonate. Low doses (750mg qd) are used to treat graves dz. High doses (2-3G qd) can cause fatal aplastic anemia. Also found in rocket launching pads and weed killer & fertlizer.
Perchlorate (CLO-4)
These drug inhibits iodine organification (the step where atomic iodine binds to tyrosine on the thryoglobulin) via inhibition of thyroxidase
Propylthiouracil (PTU), methimazole (MMI) and carbimazole in (UK).
This drug inhibits the orangification of iodine by inhibiting thyroperoxidase and also has perpipheral activity that inhibits 5-deiodinase that converts T4 to T3.
Propylthuracil. MMI shares PTU central action but not this peripheral action.
These drugs block type I and type II deiodinases to prevent conversion of T4 to T3 in periphery.
sodium ipodate and iopanoic acid.
The metabolism of these drugs also lead to the release of iodide which inhibits T3/T4 production. They are often used as radiology contrast dyes.
sodium iopodate and ionpanoic acid.
High doses of this drug cause paradoxical decrease in thyroxine biosynthesis at the organification step.
Iodide
This drug leads to partial descrution of the gland. It is used when prolonged treatment c/ anti-thyroid drugs or surgery has not led to remission. Disadvantage is long time before hyperthyroidism is controlled.
Radioactive iodide. (iodotope therapeutic).
Drugs used to treat thyroid storm are what?
antipyretics, large dose of PTU (200-400mg) b/c of central and peripheral action. BB to counteract effects on SNS amd heart.
This drug is used as replacement therapy if you suspect iodide deficiency.
Iodide in small quanities (100-300ug/day).
This drug is used to tx hypothyroidism, it is synthetic thyroxine (T4).
Levothyroxine (synthroid)
This drug is used to tx hypothyroidism. It is synthetic T3.
Lyothyronine sodium (L-T3).
