What has more surface area? Sand or a large stone? |
Sand, as the smaller particles allow for a larger overall surface area. |
What is transpiration? |
Loss of water from leaves by evaporation. Faster when stomata are open other than closed. |
What are xylem vessels? |
Cells within a plant which are narrow and hollow and contain lignin which is responsible for the transport of water and minerals around the plant. |
How to plant roots obtain water? |
The root is covered in hair which increases the surface area. The water is absorbed into the plant through osmosis, and through to the xylem vessels, which distribute it throughout the plant. |
What cell types are present within a leaf? |
Mesophyll cells - used for photosynthesis guard cell - controls the opening and closing of stoma |
What are stomata? |
Tiny holes (pores) in the epidermis (skin) of a leaf - usually on the bottom. |
Why is the transpiration stream important? |
It carries the water to the mesophyll cells which use it for photosynthesis. |
What is the difference between the phloem transport system and the xylem transport system? |
The xylem transport system is used to transport water and minerals to the leaves for photosynthesis. The phloem transport system transports the produced sugar (from photosynthesis) from the leaves to the meristems and other areas. |
