What is the purpose of the auxiliary power supply?

VL00-88 - One 85 kW auxiliary diesel generator (genset) per car which provides 415/240 V AC 3-phase 50 Hz electrical power. All operate all of the time-all under load.

VL89 -> - One 103 kW auxiliary diesel generator (genset) per car which provides 415/240 V AC 3-phase 50 Hz electrical power. Only one operates at a time, which reduces the load on them.

The auxiliary power supply unit is designed to generate electrical power for the car operation.

What equipment will not work on VL00–88 when an auxiliary diesel generator is not running?

Genset failure – VL00 to 88

The following nonessential devices will be disconnected

- Toilet hand dryer

- Cab GPO‘s – general purpose outlet

What are the 3 main components of the auxiliary power supply?

The DMU auxiliary power supply system has three main components:

- Auxiliary diesel generator

- 24 V DC battery unit

- Battery charger/inverter

What are the normal methods of starting and stopping the auxiliary gensets?

The auxiliary diesel generator is operated by a start/stop switch in the drivers entry panel located beside the front left side door or on the drivers left-hand side desk panel.

The switches are illuminated when there is a genset not running and extinguished when the genset have started.

Note: on velocity unit VL89 onwards this switch will flash when gensets are starting.

* turn battery switch ON and wait for emergency lighting to come on, then switch genset on. To switch OFF, switch off.

Start up sequence

On units VL00–88 gensets start individually in sequence DMD, DM, TM car

On unit VL89 onwards, the gensets will all start at the same time.

How are faults on auxiliary diesel generators reset?

These can only be reset on the controller itself, outside the train.

Reset a fault – VL00 to 63

- turn the switch to O (off)/press red stop button on the Control Panel. The fault should clear.

- turn the switch to hand (manual)/press green start button. The engine should start immediately.

- turn the switch to auto/press the white auto button. The engine should remain running.

If the engine shuts down again, note which fault LED is lit or read the fault message on the panel and the engine will not be able to run.

Reset a fault – VL64 to 88

- Press off button on the Control Panel. The fault should clear

- Press button under the hand (manual) symbol. The engine should start immediately.

- Press button under the AUTO symbol. The engine should remain running.

Reset a fault – VL89 onwards

- Press the reset button – note this will reset the fault on this car only.

- Press the manual button, which will attempt to start the genset on this car only.

- After the genset has started, press the auto button.

Note: no attempt to manually start gensets should be made if that genset is on fault deferment.

How many volts is supplied by each of the 12 Vlocity batteries?

There is 1 x 24 V DC battery box located on the under frame of each car.

The battery box consists of a battery tray with 12 x 2V batteries and a battery contactor chamber.

Battery charger

A 6 kW battery charger is in the 415 V AC electrical cabinet at the end on the RHS of each car.

DC battery jumper

The battery jumper plug system is interlocked to the traction system such that the car cannot be moved whilst the above plug is connected.

Shore Supply

The shore supply connection is interlocked to prevent movement of the train and starting of an auxiliary genset when connected.
