On what occasions would working by Pilotman be introduced?

1. The token has been lost


2. Trains have to work to and from the point of obstruction.


3. The signal controlling the entrance to a single or bi-di line cannot be cleared for one of the following reasons -


- The signal has failed or is disconnected.


- A track circuit has failed.


- Level Crossing equipment has failed.


- The token instrument has failed.

What are the exceptions to this (Pilotman working not needed)?

1. If modified working arrangements are authorised (if token lost/signal defective).


2. On one side of obstruction if token available on one of the sides (treat as staff).


Signal defective - Token provided and driver has token OR


- Track Circuit block lines where all are clear.


Track Circuit failure - Token provided and driver has token OR


- On Bi-Di line in one direction only OR


- on TCB track if authorised in Sectional Appendix


Level Crossing Failure - Token provided and driver has token OR


- on TCB if authorised in sectional appendix OR


- on TCB if all track circuits relating to portion of single line are clear.


Token instrument Failure - If token is available - work under instructions for single line with staff.

What must you see when working of a single line by Pilotman?

How will you identify him?

After identifying the PILOTMAN what are your actions?

1. Come to clear understanding with the PILOTMAN. What signals are you passing at danger, where do the movement end.


2. Receive the personal authority of the PILOTMAN to enter the single line section.


3. Receive a ticket RT3156.

When would you not need to receive a ticket to enter the single line?

Removing a portion of a divided train.


Evacuating passengers from a failed train.


Assisting a failed train.


Removing a train or vehicle that have proceeded without authority.

If the Pilotman was not present and you was entering to assist a failed train, who would authorise you to enter the single line section?

Signaller - who would have authority from the pilotman.

When MUST the PILOTMAN travel with you?

T - To and from point of obstruction


O - on a one-train working line.


A - Assisting from rear out to rear.


N - No comms - complete block failure if there is no communication between signal boxes.


S - Signaller cannot make sure that the single line section is clear after the passage of each train.

What speed would you be travelling over the single line?

Permissible speed except when the drivers tickets states otherwise.

When you reach the end of the single line section, what must you do with your ticket?

Cancel your drivers ticket by writing CANCELLED across it and hand it to the PILOTMAN.

If the PILOTMAN did not travel with you what are your actions?

Stop if the PILOTMAN instructed you to do so, if so you must tell the signaller that you have arrived complete with tail lamp. If do not have to stop, cancel ticket at first opportunity and fax at end of turn.

If you fail within the single line section and the PILOTMAN has travelled with you, who arranges assistance?

The PILOTMAN, if required he can also provide assistance protection. If he is not on train, he MUST travel with assisting train IF


-the assistance is to come from the rear AND the failed train is to be withdrawn to the rear.

If modified working is introduced - what would happen?

The signaller would stop and explain what is happening then they


- would dictate RT3177 ticket to you which you must fill in.


- instruct you as to where you are stopping if needed.


- which signal will be passed at danger.

What is the speed limit during modified working?

50mph

If instructed to stop at the end of the single line, what must you do?

- STOP


- Cancel ticket


- Report back to signaller that you have arrived complete with tail lamps.
