Autocratic |
Leadership/management style where decisions making occurs at the top of an organisation. There is minimal delegation and close supervision of subordinates. |
Democratic |
Decisions are made by the majority and there is more delegation of work to employees who are given greater control over their working lives. |
Laissez-faire |

The Blake Mouton grid |
Compares the level of concern for people with the level of concern for task and then categories into 5 types of management: country club, team leader, impoverished, middle of the road and produce or perish. |
Impoverished |
This leader is mostly ineffective as they have a low concern for task and a low concern for people. |
Country club |
As long as team members are happy and secure they will work hard. High concern for people/ low concern for task. The task suffers from a lack of direction and control. |
Produce or perish |
They are significantly concerned about the task and less concern about employees. They view punishment as the most effective means to motivate employees. They are usually associated with autocratic leaders. |
Middle of the road |
Medium task/medium people. Compromises on a bit of each concern so neither task nor people needs are fully met. Leaders who use this style settle for average performance. |
Team leader |
This is the best managerial style as the leaders stress the task needs and the needs of the people equally high as they have a high concern for task and a high concern for people. This creates a team environment based on trust and respect as employees are committed to and have a high stake in the organisation's success which leads to high satisfaction and motivation and as a result high production. |
