The thorax is the upper region of the body which separates the lungs from the lower part of the body by the diaphragm.

What is ventilation?
|
Ventilation is the process of bringing air into and out of the lungs!

What outlines the lungs and supports them?
|
The pleural membranes which also trap pleural fluid to protect the lungs from creating friction with the ribs.

What occurs whilst BREATHING IN (the contractions and pressure)?
|
1) Intercostal muscles and diaphragm contract (diaphragm moves downwards and chest moves upwards)
2) volume of thorax increases 3)decreases the pressure drawing air in! |

What occurs whilst BREATHING OUT?
|
1) intercostal muscles and diaphragm relax
2) thorax volume decreases 3)air is forced out! |
