How do you diagnose meningitis?

1. blood culture- done prior to abs
2. LP-check fundus prior for ICP. 3.Positive brudinski or Kernig sign. |

What antibiotics are given to treat bacterial meningitis?
|
Ampicillin, penicillin, cephalosporin(rocephin) because they age able to penetrate the BBB.

What preventative meausures could you teach to prevent Meningitis?

1. Get your flu/pneumo/ menigitis vaccine.
2. Treat resp and ear infections in early stages. |

What is the major signs of Meningitis?
|
1. Nuchal Rigidity (late).
2. Fever. 3. Decreased LOC. 4. SEVERE H/A. 5. N&V. 6. Signs of ICP. 7. Photophobia |

What cranial nerves are affected by Meningitis?
|
CN III, IV, VI, VIII. These will subside after afew weeks but hearing loss may be permanent(steroids to prevent)
