Active listening means paying close attention to a client verbally as well as non verbally and listening to speaker's signs & sounds.
Observing body language, listening to their feelings, self awareness and paraphrasing, etc. The goal of active listening is to understand the feelings and views of the person.
For example one day I went to the hospital with my father because he had a very bad headache but he doesn't say anything when I asked "How is your headache?".
He had responded with "Not that much" but his facial expression and non verbal behavior indicated that he was in lots of pain.

Mom: Hi, Son how was your show and tell?
Son: Good, mom.
Mom: That's good, but what did you say in class?
Son: About games.
