The Route of Drugs are grouped into two classes. Mention them: |
•Systemic Route •Local Route Systemic route: These are drugs administered and intended to enter blood circulation and distribute to the body and target site. Local Route: These are drugs administered to act locally on the applied area. Hence drug concentration is high at the site of application and avoid from spreading to other sites. |
Systemic route is subclassified into two, mention them: |
•ENTERAL - Oral, Rectal & Sublingual •PARENTERAL |
Mention the 3 Advantages and 3 Disadvantages of ORAL Route of administering Drugs and give the types of drugs: |
ADVANTAGES • It can be self administered •It is the cheapest form of administration •Safest route of Administration •convinient for patient. DISADVANTAGES • Gastric irritation could lead to vomiting. • Slow onset of action. • Absorption may be variables. •Not useful in unconscious patient. •Drug might be destroyed by digestive juice. Examples: - Tablet - Capsule - Solutions - Syrups - Elixirs |
Mention the 3 Advantages and 3 Disadvantages of RECTAL Route of administering Drugs and give the types of drugs: |
Advantages • useful in unconscious patient. • Direct absorption throught the external and internal haemorrhiodal vein. • Systemic effect Dasadvantages •Inconvinient •irritation and may cause inflammation •Slow and irregular absorption. Examples: - ointments - Suppositories - Tablet - Solutions |
Mention the 3 Advantages and 3 Disadvantages of Sublingual Route of administering Drugs and give the types of drugs: |
Advantages • Rapid onset of Action. • No first pass metabolism. • Systemic effect Disadvantages •Inconvinient •chances of spitting the drugs Examples: - Tablet - Troches/ lozenges |
The systemic route of drugs is grouped into two: mention them: |
Enteral: Drugs administered through the alimentary canal. Examples: oral, Rectal, Sublingual Parenteral: Drug administered other than alimentary canal. Examples: Inhalation, injection, Transcutaneous and Transmucusal. |
Mention the 3 Advantages and 3 Disadvantages of Parenteral Route of administering Drugs and give the types of drugs: |
Advantages • Can be administered to unconscious patient. • Rapid onset of Action. • No first pass metabolism. • Avoids modification by alimentary juice or liver enzymes. • Drug-dose accuracy. Disadvantages •More expensive •Self medication is difficult •likely to cause infection if equipment are not well sterilized. •Important structures might be damaged. E.g Nerves and arteries. Examples:- Injections- inhalers |
There are three primary route of Injections mention them: |
•Subcutaneous (subQ) •Intravenous (IV) •Intramuscular (IM) |
Mention the 2 Advantages and 2 Disadvantages of SUBCUTANEOUS injection Route of administering Drugs and give the types of drugs: |
Advantages • self injection is possible • High Bioavailability • Action is sustained and uniform Disadvantages •only small volume can be injected (1-2ml) •Not suitable for shock patient •Drug Absorption is slower than IM route. Examples:- Solutions |
Mention the 3 Advantages and 3 Disadvantages of INTRAMUSCULAR Route of administering Drugs and give the types of drugs: |
Advantages • Depot preparation can be used. • High bioavailability and Avoids first pass metabolism. • Fast absorption and rapid onset of action Disadvantages •self medication is difficult •causes pain while injecting. •Volume of injection should not pass 10mlExamples:- solutions |
Mention the 3 Advantages and 3 Disadvantages of INTRAVENOUS Route of administering Drugs and give the types of drugs: |
Advantages • immediate actions and Response • Can be given to unconscious patient. • Almost 100% Bioavailability Disadvantages •Not self administered •local irritation might cause PHEBITIS •low chances of reversal Examples:- |
What type or mode of injection is used in Tuberculin or Allergy testing? |
Intra-dermal Injection |
Anti malignancy compound are administered through what mode of injection? |
Intrathecal and intra-arterial |
Administration of drug into the subarachnoid space of spinal cord is under what mode of injection |
Intrathecal |
Administration of drugs directly into the serum membrane is what mode of injection? |
Intraperitoneal |
Mention the 3 Advantages and 3 Disadvantages of INHALATION Route of administering Drugs and give the types of drugs: |
Advantages • Self administration • Rapid onset of action • Avoids first pass metabolism Disadvantages •Dose may cause irritation to the mucosal respiratory tract •Difficulty in dose estimation •Expensive dosage form Examples:- Earosols |
