What is ventilation? |
Ventilation is the planned and systematic removal of smoke, heat and super heated gases and replacement with cooler, cleaner air. |

What are the four types of ventilation? |
1. Natural ventilation. Eg: opening windows and doors. 2. Manual ventilation. Eg: breaking down walls and doors. 3. Mechanical ventilation. Eg: using a PPV fan to create positive or negative pressure. 4. Hydraulic ventilation. Eg: using hose streams to push smoke through windows. |

What is salvage? |
Salvage is the prevention or reduction of damage from indirect causes such as heat, smoke, water, debris, breakage and dust. |

What are the three stages of salvage? |
1. Preventative 2. Protective 3. Recovery |

Define the preventative stage of salvage. |
Preventative salvage takes place simultaneously with firefighting to reduce avoidable damage. Eg: causing as little damage as possible during forced entry, using minimal water, ventilating as early as possible. |

Define protective salvage. |
Protective salvage is fine in conjunction with the control of the fire and is an extension of preventative salvage. Eg: reducing water damage, protecting or removing goods from the structure. |

Protective salvage is done in conjunction with the control of the fire and is an extension of preventative salvage. Eg: reducing water damage, protecting or removing goods from the structure. |

Define recovery salvage. |
Recovery salvage begins once the fire has been extinguished. Eg: removing remaining water, securing premises and valuables, handing the premises over to the owner, occupier or VICPOL before leaving the scene. |
