Have you ever been to the zoo? You probably have on a field trip, or a family outing! Did you notice animals that look angry? You probably did. You may have noticed this because the animals did not enjoy being kept in captivity all day without being in their natural habitat.
Zoos do not provide a natural habitat for animals. The animals don’t have room to roam in zoos. Due to not having enough room, they are cramped up in cages. Animals that have been removed from the wild do not know how to react to their new environments, causing stress. Due to this stress, they may be aggressive towards the Zookeeper that takes “care” of them. Animals will misbehave in zoos. They won’t be drugged to make them seem happy. They will be truly happy. They won’t lose their natural instincts or abilities. They won’t have to worry about a disease called Zoochosis. They can swim or roam through hundreds of miles of land and water. They also don’t have to worry about the next little kid coming up and banging on their cage. Wouldn’t that scare you? It scares the animals. Just like humans, animals want to live a happy, and positive life. They can be more positive and less worrisome if they are living a truly free life. For example, elephants are considered one of the smartest animals on the planet. Elephants have many needs that cannot be taken care of if they are held captive. In the wild, they live in large groups with up to 100 elephants, and in zoos there are normally only 2 or 3, due to space issues. (lcanimal.org) Another example is aquatic animals. Aquatic animals, such as cetaceans, cannot swim in a straight line for very long, and they cannot dive very deep when located in zoos. They can not dive deep because the tanks that they are kept in are not long, or deep enough.
