Degree of a Polynomial

The sum of the exponents of the variables in the monomial

Degree of 3x^2y^2 + 4xy^5 - 12x^3y^2 = 6

The Absolute Value

The absolute value of x is the distance from 0 to x on a number line.

|-8| = 8

|3| = 3

Like Terms

Terms with the same variables raised to the same exponets

3a^2b^2 and 7a^2b^2

Slope

A measure of the steepness of a line. If (x,y) and (x2,y2) are any two points on a graph, the slope of the line, known as m, is represented by the equation m = y2 - y1 / x2 - x1

Whole number

The set of zero and all natural numbers {0,1,2,3...}

Discrete graph

A graph made up of unconnected points

Slope-intercept form

Standard form of a linear equation is y = mx + b, where m is the slope of the equation and b is the y-intercept.

Direct Variation

A linear relationship between two variables, x and y, can be written in the form of y = kx, where k is a non-zero constant

Inverse Operations

Operations that undo each other.

+ -; * /

Opposites

The opposite of a natural number a is the number that is the same distance from zero as -a on the opposite side of the graph. The sum of the numbers is 0.

Function

A relation in which every input is paired with exactly one output.

x y
- -
0 0
1 2
2 4
3 6
Reciprocal

For all real numbers, except 0, the reciprocal of a is 1/a. The product if the number and its reciprocal is 1.

2 1/2

1 1

-1 1

0 undefined

Coefficient

A number multiplied by a variable. In the coefficient 2x + 3y, 2 is the coefficient of x and 3 is the coefficient of y.

Independent Variable

The input of a function; a variable whose value determines the value of the output, or dependent variable.

{x + y = 7}

{x - y = 1}

Solution: (4,3)

Constant

A value that does not change

(3, 0, π)

Leading Coefficient

The coefficient of the first term of a polynomial in standard form

6x - 7x - 5;

-1x - 5;

Leading Coefficient: -1x

Consistent Systems

A system of equations or inequalities that has at least one solution

x + y = 6

x - y = 4

Solution: (5,1)

Inconsistent systems

A system of equations or inequalities that has no solutions

{x + y = 0}
{x + y = 1} X

Integers

A member of the set of whole numbers and their opposites

{...-3,-2,-1,0,1,2,3...}

Perpendicular Lines

Lines that intersect at 90° angles

Natural Numbers

All counting numbers

{1,2,3,4...}

Dependent Variable

The output of a function; a variable whose value depends on the value of the input, or independent variable.

For y = 2x + 1

input = x; output = y

Parallel Lines

Lines in the same plane that do not intersect
