Properties of Nitrogen
All compounds containing nitrogen will react the same way
Nitrogen connected to four groups
Nitrogen connected to four groups will have a positive charge
Naming Amines
N should be placed on substituents that are attached to nitrogen. There should be multiple Ns for each group. If the amino is the highest priority, -amine should be placed at the end of the name. If it is not the highest priority, the word -amino should be used to designate
Ten Nitrogen containing compounds
1. Carbamates 2. Isocyanites 3. Urethanes 4. Polyurethanes 5. Enamines 6. Imines 7. Nitriles/cyanide 8. Diazo Compounds 9. Nitrenes 10. Azide
Amine boiling points/hydrogen bonding
Since they are not as electronegative as oxygen, then have a lower boiling point than alcohols/they do not engage in hydrogen bonding
Nitrogen and Aromatic compounds
Nitrogens that are attached to aromatic rings will be less reactive
Reaction: NH3 + CH3Br
Ammonia will react with alkyl halides in a substitution reactions in which the alkly group will attach to the CH3 group. A base will then deprotonate the chain leaving a CH3NH2 group
Gabriel Synthesis
this is one way to create an alkyl amine- an alkane tha is attached to amine. when a diol is combined with an ammonia the NH3 group will attach to the two hydroxy groups and diplace them. Then if you add an alkyl halide, the nitrogen will displace the haldie group and the entire chain will attach to what was on the diol. Then if you add a base (NaOH) the alkane and amine will come off leaving an alkly amine
Effect of Zn with dilute HCl
this will turn a nitro group -NO2- to an amine -NH3. This reduces and then protonates
LAH effect on nitrile
LAH is a very good reducing agent and will remove the double bond to the carbon and the R group
Acetone + NH3
double bond of the oxygen will be removed and replaced with NH2
Effect of MeI and Ag2O on amide groups
These will result in a Hoffman elimination in which the amine group is removed and double bond is formed. Remember, hoffman will create a double bond to the outside.
enamines
amine group attached to C=C
imines
contain nitrogen-carbon double bonds (R)2-C=NR
nitriles/cyanides
Carbon-nitrogen triple bond
Azide has...?
N3
as molecular weight of amines increases, so does the ___
BP
e-donating ______ basicity while e-withdrawing _________ basicity
Increase Decrease due to the stabilization of the charge
