The poem ‘Eclipse’ by Owen Shears presents us with many themes about love and loss. Many techniques are also used to emphasise the thought of the poem. ‘From His Coy Mistress’ by Deryn Rees-Jones presents many similarities and differences concerning the themes of loss of love and also used a variety of techniques to show the themes of the poem.

INTRODUCTION

Both poems evoke themes of isolation through language. For example in ‘From His Coy Mistress’ the protagonist says how she wants privacy and to be isolated into her own world by “cut[ting] off [her] hair” and “dress[ing] in black”. This shows that the protagonist does not want to receive attention off men and feels by isolating herself it would help her rid her obsession with men. Whereas in Eclipse the protagonist has been isolated by his previous partner and her new lover.

PARAGRAPH 1 - PART 1

For example when the protagonist says “it unlocked in me, and I saw us connected again” it shows he is not ready to let go of his estranged partner yet and is jealous because he is being eclipsed by her new lover which may make him feel helpless and blames himself for what happened. The two poems link to a loss of love because they show both protagonist’s experiences of isolation due to the loss of love however they both feel differently towards the theme of isolation. For example the female speaker in FHCM wants to feel isolated in contrast to that the male speaker in Eclipse has already been isolated.

PARAGRAPH 1 - PART 2

There is a similar description of the loss of love in both poems. For instance, in Eclipse there has been a loss of a relationship for the protagonist due to an affair. The word “clipped” means to cut off or end therefore this links with how the protagonist feels because the relationship he was in was ended by his partner and he may now feel despondent and an omission of guilt towards the breakup. A similar theme is presented in FHCM when the protagonist tells us how she may have experienced a loss of potential genuine love, although she hasn't experienced a love like the protagonist in Eclipse.

PARAGRAPH 2 - PART 1

The woman in FHCM still has the opportunity for love however she is choosing not to relish the luxuries she could have. Whereas the protagonist in Eclipse no longer is loved by his partner and she has left him for a new man. In FHCM the phrase “lie in a narrow bed” denotes to the reader that she wants to rid herself of luxuries, in her case men and sex, and brings in the theme of her wanting to feel isolation again.
