What type of message categories can show on the DID panel?

Ready

Alarm - Fault Exists & Alarm initiated.

Fault - Fault detected and operational restriction applied, 4 character code.

How are the cylinders of an NR engine numbered?

Looking from Cab end, L8 to L1 on Left, R8 to R1 right.

Note - 8 Short end. L Co-Drivers Side.

What types of GE Locomotives does PN Intermodal regularly use?

NR Class. 93 Class.

What can be found in the vestibule of an NR?

CA1,2,3&4. Toilet. DID Panel, Tool Kit, First Aid & Emergency Equipment. Broom.

What can be found in the Auxiliary Compartment?

CA4 compartment. Alternator/Equipment Blower.

What can be found in the alternator compartment?

Traction & Auxiliary Alternators.

What can be found in the engine compartment?

Diesel Engine & Related components.

What can be found in the radiator compartment?

Roof Mounted Radiators & 2 cooling fans. Cooling System Header tank, Lube Oil Cooler, Lube Oil Filters, Air Compressor, Traction Motor Blower, Exhaust Motor Blower, Diesel Engine Combustion Air Filters.

GE Locos (NR & 93) have a 2 or 4 stroke engine?

4 stroke.

On an NR how do you identify the front and rear of the diesel engine? What are they also referred to as?

Front - No2 end of loco near turbo, coolant tank etc. Also known as 'Free End'.

Rear - No1 end of loco, Traction Alternator end. 'Alternator End'.

How is combustion air delivered to the cylinders of an NR or 93?

Externally mounted air inlet mainfolds, inlet valves mounted on top of each cylinder head.

What are the covers with handles on the bottom of an NR 7FDL engine?

Crankcase covers.

How does an NR detect positive crankcase pressure?

Pressure sensors.

Where can the gauge panel be found on an NR and what gauges are there?

Co-driver's side near L8 cylinder (with emergency stop & test pop switch). Fuel Pressure (min 300 idle, 350 start), Turbo Boost Pressure & Lube Oil Pressure.

Where is the turbo on an NR?

Free end of engine (no2 end of loco, near oil fill station).

Do NR's have a turbo lube pump?

No, the engine lube oil pump lubricates the turbo bearings and shall supply enough oil to turbo to keep lubricating the turbo after the engine is stopped.

What is is the function of the intercoolers near the turbo on an NR?

Air from turbo passes intercoolers and enclosed radiator which cools the air before it flows to the air inlet manifolds and in to the cylinders.

How/where is combustion air supplied to an NR (from atmosphere)?

Air vents and filters between engine & radiator (above oil filters & oil cooler). Exhaust blower blows dirty air back to atmosphere.

How does an NR protect it's engine from oil pressure/temperature problems?

Oil Pressure sensor and Temperature sensor enable microcomputers to shutdown or limit engine speed. Engine speed will be limited until oil reaches a preset temperature.

What is the purpose of the relief valve on the side of the lube oil pump NR?

To bypass the oil filters & oil cooler if oil is cold or lube oil filters are blocked.

Where is the water pump(s) located on an NR?

One pump at the free end of the engine. Co-drivers side.

GE locos do not have engine running/engine dead coolant levels on the sight glass, why?

Wet type system, coolant stays in the system even when engine is shutdown.

How many cooling fans do NR locos have?

2, below the radiators. (Above Compressor & Traction Motor Blower). Fans at operate at quarter, half or full speed as required depending in water temperature and engine load.

What is operating range for engine coolant water on an NR and what happens when temperature is below or over?

60°C to 110°C. Under 60° Engine output is limited. 110° Engine starts to derate, 116° all power is lost.

What will happen if an NR starts to lose coolant pressure?

Engine will derate and eventually shutdown if pressure continues dropping.

Note - There are water temperature and pressure sensors, if these fail the oil temperature and pressure sensors will monitor the cooling water system.

Where are the fuel filters and sight glass on an NR?

Co-driver's side, beside engine at floor level.

Briefly describe how Electronic Fuel Injection works?

EFI delivers appropriate amount of fuel at the appropriate time to each cylinder. Quantity and timing is calculated by monitoring Engine Pressures, Temperates and Shaft speed. Solenoids regulate the amount of fuel delivered to injectors by injection pumps.
