Why won’t the velocity engine start - at least 2 x reasons

- reverser not in neutral

- Key not in

- Auxiliaries must be running

- Engines are isolated

How to isolate a velocity saloon door

- Access the emergency release panel

- Place the door isolation switch to ISOLATE

- Lower the emergency exit handle prevention bar

- Close and lock the panel door

Park brake fault tile

When illuminated, indicates the park brake is applied.

Park brake will not release using park brake switch

- check Main res pressure is above 480 KPA

- Check Spring Park brake circuit breaker

- Release Park brakes manually using pneumatic pushbutton

Park brake will not apply using park brake switch

- apply park brakes manually using pneumatic push button

Park brake light illuminates and audible alarm in running

- indicates at least one park brake is applied in the consist

- In this condition do not continue to drive the train STOP

- Apply and release the park brake switch

If light does not extinguish:

- deactivate the cab

- do not apply the park brake

- locate the car that has the applied indication on the park brake gauge

- manually release the park brakes on that car then isolate the service brakes on both bogies

- run as per braking instructions

Note: when the service brakes are isolated the brake cylinder pressure light will flash while the brakes are applied.

Airbag fault tile

Airbag fault tile illuminated and audible alarm indicates one or more of the airbags are deflated.

- Check main res pressure is above 750 KPA

- Check airbag isolation cocks are open

- Check for bent or broken levelling valve rods. If rods are damaged, isolate faulty airbag

- A maximum speed restriction of 80 km/h must be applied when operating car with one or more deflated airbags

Fire under frame fault tile

The fire underframe fault tile is illuminated and an audible alarm indicates a fire has occurred on the traction and/or auxiliary engine.

Main and auxiliary engines will shut down on the affected car and cannot be restarted.

The driver is to:

- Note affected car and advise conductor

- Bring Train to a stand at a suitable location

- Confirm whether there is actually a fire or a false detection

If there is a fire the driver will:

- Press the fire discharge button in any cab or the push buttons located under the under frame on the affected car

Note: cab operated discharge buttons will only activate when speed is below 5 km/h.

To cancel audible alarm, the driver must trip the fire control C/B in the cab of the affected car with consultation with BT station supervisor on ph: 0428 259 069.

Towing a VLocity

A VLocity must not be attached electrically to a dead (shut down) VLocity.

It is necessary to turn on the batteries and start the auxiliary engines in the dead unit to prevent tripping the train control circuit breaker when coupling. The circuit breaker will trip because excessive current will be drawn through the coupler to power the train lines on the dead unit. If the circuit breaker trips all engines will shut down, and the engine and the unit will not be able to be restarted until all circuit breakers are reset.

Once the battery off sequence is initiated the train will lock itself into the shutdown sequence and the driver will not be able to restart the train until the sequence has finished.

Towing procedure

As a safety precaution ensure the wheels on the failed velocity unit at chocked before:

- Isolating the dump valves by operating the B 32 cocks

- Attaching a relief loco or Train to a defective VLocity

- Detaching a relief loco or train from a defective like VLocity, if unable to apply the park brake

*Remember to remove the chicks prior to moving the vehicle!

See courseware for detailed description of attaching a velocity to a transition coupler.

Defective emergency stop button

If you are unable to reset the emergency stop button the following procedure is to be used:

- train to operate under two person conditions account the penalty brake will not operate

- Isolate the B32 cock on all cars in the consist

- Break the seal and rotate the EP brake isolate

- Trip the brake control circuit breaker in each cab on all cars in the consist

- Break the seal and rotate the traction interlock isolate switch to the isolate position in the leading unit

- Cut in the secondary brake controller

- Inform train controller and send a fault report

Defective main reservoir

If the main reservoir is holed and the air is continuously leaking on that car:

- Close the main res cock between the affected cars

- Second driver to be obtained

See detailed instructions in courseware.

Restarting auxiliary engines

The auxiliary engine will not be able to be restarted even if the batteries are switched off until the fault is reset locally on the auxiliary engine.

If the auxiliary engines need to be restarted after an emergency shut down the ESTOP BYPASS has a three position switch with the following functions:

1. NORM Normal position.

2. RESET GEN Reset Gen after instructions from maintenance to break the seal, the auxiliary Genste must first be reset by toggling the switch.

3. BYPASS after reset, the selector switch can be returned to and sit in the bypassed position to override the ESTOP fault and allow restarting of the auxiliary gen sets.

The Auxiliary Genset should then be able to be restarted using the auxiliary Genset Start/Stop switch in the drivers cab.

The auxiliary Genset Start/Stop switch must first be toggled to STOP before re-commencing the start-up sequence.

Auxiliary fault tile

The auxiliary engine fault tile indicates an auxiliary engine fault including low oil and low coolant and has an audible alarm.

The three phase will be supplied from the other car.

The air-conditioners will operate at reduced capacity, toilet hand dryer, cab GPO‘s will not operate.

VLocity 89 onwards the Aircon will still run at full capacity.

Isolated saloon door allowances

50% of doors on each side of each vlocity can be isolated and the vehicle remain in service until it returns to Southern Cross.

Two adjacent doors on the same side must not be isolated. Doors on either side at each driving cab end of each VLocity must be able to be operated normally for the VLocity to remain in service.

Conductors to place a DOOR OUT OF SERVICE sign on defective doors and send a fault report.

Note: if the number of defective doors exceeds the above then the train is to stop at the next station and not remain in revenue service.

Wheel slip/slide fault tile

The wheel slip/slide fault tile indicates the car has a wheel slip/slide.

The indication light will extinguish when slip/slide has been rectified. If indication light fails to extinguish when stationary this will be due to one of the following faults:

- Light steady with audible alarm and car #

- Faulty wheel slip/slide protection

If the fault light and alarm remains on:

- Bring DMU to a stand still and check bogie mounted wheel slip detectors and cabling for damage - these are fitted to the axle boxes

- Drive with caution in low adhesion conditions as wheel flats may occur

- Turn off brake control circuit breaker

Brake computer fault tile

The brake computer fault tile indicates a faulty brake control unit BCU and has an audible alarm.

- Check brake control circuit breaker

- Cut in the secondary brake controller and use the secondary brake controller for applying the brakes

Brakes locked on

- Isolate EP brake on faulty car

- Operate train using secondary brake controller

Main reservoir fault tile

The main reservoir fault tile indicates the main res pressure has fallen below 600 KPA.

- Check for any air leaks in the MR system

- Check that the air compressors are operational

Transmission fault tile

The transmission fault tile indicates a transmission fault and has an audible alarm.

No hydrodynamic on that car and the revs return to idle.

The transmission has failed, and the vehicle will operate at 66% traction and hydrodynamic brake will not operate on that car.

Battery charger fault tile

The battery charger fault tile indicates a battery charger fault and has an audible alarm.

- Check the circuit breaker

- The battery charger has failed. The battery voltage will be supplied from the other car. If all battery chargers fail the batteries will only last one hour.

Air-conditioner fault tile

The air-conditioner fault tile indicates an air conditioning fault and has an audible alarm.

- Check 24V and 415V AC circuit breakers
