A LOGICAL , SYSTEMATIC approach to ISOLATING a specific cause of a fault using all available information. |
What is the aim of fault finding? Part 2 |
To locate the cause of the fault as quickly as possible and rectify the fault correctly the first time. |
What are 7 possible results of poor fault finding? |
1. Could induce faults/damage/contamination 2. Safety concerns if test flight is undertaken with faults remaining 3. Depleted rotable pool 4. Wastes time 5. Wastes money 6. Reduces morale, increases stress affects air/ground relations 7. Bad PR |
What is an operational check? |
A task to confirm an item is fulfilling its intended function (considered a failure finding task) |
What is a functional check? (Include where a functional test is performed) |
A functional QUANTITATIVE test or check of an aircraft system ON THE GROUND to determine if one or more functions of an item is OPERATING WITHIN SPECIFIED LIMITS. |
What needs to be done in preparation of aircraft for checks? 4 things |
1. Identify correct aircraft 2. Check F700 3. Check relevant publications 4. Check with senior personnel |
What are 7 examples of hazards to be aware of? |
1. HF tx 2. Major system or component tests (engines, props, radar - anticol lights flashing. 3. HERO conditions 4. Comp wash’s 5. Engine runs 6. Aircraft on jacks 7. Fuel tank repairs |
What are typical OLM activities? 7 |
1. Dispatch and receipt servicings, preflight and afterflight. 2. In situ operating checks 3. In situ adjustments and alignments. 4. Rectification of line replaceable units LRU’s 5. Weapon loading and arming 6. Fuelling 7. Lubrication |
When is ground running undertaken? |
Where GSE is not available or not suitable, ac engines, apu’s or gas turbine compressors may be used when ac services are required. In addition engines, APU’s and GTC’s may need to be started for diagnostic or testing purposes. |
Define a maintenance check flight |
A functional check of the ac as a whole, or of specific item or system, carried out in the air to ensure safe operation of ac within its flight envelope to ensure it meets the prescribed standards of airworthiness. |
What are 2 types of other types MFC? |
IFE’s inflight evaluations TC’s taxi checks |
What are 7 fault finding methods? |
1. Operational check 2. Isolate the system 3. Is it a fault? 4. Ask an experienced tradesman 5. Physically identify/ look at the component 6. Carry out a functional check 7. Slaving -using a known serviceable item 8. Testing |
What is required to use external test equipment? |
You need to be signed out on F125 - or find someone authorised. |

What is an IFE? |
