What are the problems that may arise from ineffective fault finding |
Could induce further faults Safety concern on flights Depletes spares stores Wastes time/man hours Wastes money Decreases moral/decreases aircrew ground crew relations Bad public relations |
What is the definition of effective fault finding |
Effective fault finding is to provide a logical, systematic approach to isolating a specific cause if a fault using all available information. The aim is to locate the cause of the fault as quickly as possible and rectify the fault correctly the first time. Aka troubleshooting. |
Definition of OPCK |
NZAP 6003-1 LC1-11e Operational Check to determine if it is fulfilling it's intended function, does not require quantitative tolerances. |
Definition of Functional check |
NZAP 6000 p2 LC2.14 Quantitative test on the ground operating within specified limits to ensure serviceability |
What do you do to prepare for fault finding |
Confirm tail number Check relevant publications Check the f700 Check with senior personnel |
What are hazards associated with olm |
HF transmissions Major component tests HERO conditions Designated area activities eg compressor wash HP and LP engine runs Aircraft on Jack's Open fuel tanks |
Typical OLM activities |
Dispatch and receipt Operating checks Adjustments and alignments Replacement of LRU's (line replaceable units) Weapons loading and unloading Fuelling Lubrication Engine changes Satisfaction of SRI's |
Ground running pubs |
NZAP 6000 C2.18 |
Check flights |
NZAP 6000 C2.15 A functional check of the aircraft as a whole or a specific item carried out in the air to ensure the safe operation of the a/c within its flight envelope |
In flight evaluation or taxi check |
A less prescriptive local requirement to confirm the serviceability by flight or taxi. |
What might you ask the fault originator |
Has it happened before Could it be replicated How many times did this occur What other systems were in operation What are the facts Has any maintenance been done on the system config System indicators confirmation What was the altitude and configSystem indicators confirmationCheck procedures used to isolate the fault Check procedures used to isolate the fault |
Where might the sources of readily available information be? |
. F700, PUBS , SMIs etc .Troubleshooting Charts .SMEs and Experienced On Type Personnel .SAP |
What are the 15 fault finding methods? |
Talk to Fault Originator Operational Test Physical look Verify fault symptoms Other cockpit readings Trouble shooting charts Read description Ask around Experienced tradesman Study Schematics Learn Systems Research fault history available F700 etc
Is it a fault Consider other systems too Ensure not operator error Use the half split rule Iscolate Slaving Testing |
What is the Half split rule? |
A method used to quickly locate a fault on a linear system |
What is EICAS? |
Engine indicating and crew alert system |
What is BITE? |
Built in test equipmemt |
What is MDS? |
Monitoring diagnostics system? |
What is an IFE? |
In flight evaluation. A test of a system is carried out on an opportune basis, and does not affect safe operation of flight. |
How many times can a cb be reset? |
Once |
What do you do to a component after slaving it? |
Removed serviceable and sent back under rebuild order |
